Sodium metasilicate, a very corrosive compound, is precipitated by acids and alkaline earth and heavy metal ions. When heated or acidified, solutions of the compound are hydrolyzed to free sodium ions and silicic acid. Sodium metasilicate is produced by the fusion of sodium carbonate with silicon dioxide or silica sand at about 1400 °C.
Sodium silicate is a generic name for chemical compounds with the formula Na 2x Si y O 2y+x or (Na 2 O) x · (SiO 2) y, such as sodium metasilicate Na 2 SiO 3, sodium orthosilicate Na 4 SiO 4, and sodium pyrosilicate Na 6 Si 2 O 7. The anions are often polymeric. These compounds are generally colorless transparent solids or white powders, and ...
Sodium metasilicate is produced by fusing sand with sodium carbonate at very high temperatures, notes the International Programme on Chemical Safety. This produces a clear, white or grayish-white crystal solution. Sodium is a base, and therefore has a high pH level. When interacting with acid, sodium metasilicate will often neutralize that acid ...
Sodium silicate is the common name for compounds with the formula Na2(SiO2)nO. A well-known member of this series is sodium metasilicate, Na2SiO3. Also known as waterglass or liquid glass, these ...
Sodium metasilicate is used as a starting material for zeolites and silica catalysts. It acts as an adhesive and binder, corrosion inhibitor, penetrating sealant, coagulant in waste water treatment, fixative for hand dyeing with reactive dye and detergent auxiliaries.
